Build a content-refresh shortlist

Use this guide to find pages with repeated traffic declines or a lasting drop. The assistant returns a shortlist that separates content reviews from other investigations.

When to use this use case

Use this guide to plan updates to existing content. A decline across complete periods is different from a comparison between two reporting windows.

What to ask

Replace the domain and end date before using this prompt.

Build a content-refresh shortlist for example.com using six complete months of data available through September 30, 2026. Find pages with repeated click declines or a lasting step-down. Show the actual periods used. Exclude login, account, and other utility pages from the content shortlist, but report important excluded losses separately. Review the main queries for each selected page. Separate refresh candidates from ranking, page-change, or technical investigations. Do not assume that outdated content caused every loss.

How the assistant runs it

The assistant finds declining pages before choosing the type of work:

  1. Call get_server_status, list_sites, and get_connection_status to confirm the site and data freshness.
  2. Call find_content_decay with by set to page. Choose weekly or monthly periods based on the review question and available history.
  3. Read the returned period window. Check whether the tool excluded a partial period.
  4. Separate repeated declines from lasting step-downs. Use the change point to locate the period that needs investigation.
  5. Call get_page_queries with full URLs for selected pages. Use get_query_pages and detect_keyword_cannibalization if a query suggests a page change or competing pages.
  6. Review current content and known site changes before assigning refresh work. The analytics alone do not establish the page's technical state.

Example tool input

This input requests page declines across six complete monthly periods.

json
{  "tool": "find_content_decay",  "arguments": {    "site": "example.com",    "to": "2026-09-30",    "by": "page",    "granularity": "monthly",    "periods": 6,    "minDecliningPeriods": 3,    "minImpressions": 100,    "limit": 20,    "searchVertical": "web"  }}

What the result includes

The shortlist contains the following information:

  • Page URL and engine.
  • Decline pattern, period series, and change point.
  • The tool's estimated lost clicks and the period they describe.
  • Visible query changes and page-competition evidence.
  • A proposed content review or a separate investigation.
  • Important utility-page losses excluded from the refresh list.

How to read the result

A sustained pattern means performance fell across repeated periods. A stepped pattern means the tool detected a drop that persisted. Neither label proves the cause.

Check missing periods and row limits before treating a zero as measured traffic. Bing's limited lists can omit pages, and Google's breakdowns can also lose rows. Do not describe an omitted page as de-indexed without separate evidence.

Six months do not establish annual seasonality. Review longer history and business context before describing a decline as permanent. A login-page loss belongs in a different investigation from an article refresh.
